Rock of Ages Baptist Church Leaving Maywood!!!

Sources tell the Proviso Insider web log that the Rock of Ages Baptist Church in Maywood is preparing to leave Maywood after 58 years in the community. Sources say the Rev. Marvin E. Wiley announced at the Sunday services on September 21, 2008, that the church is looking for 25 acres of land and will leave Maywood asap. According to sources, the church announced last year that it desires to expand the church and build additional parking lots. However, the Maywood Village leadership has continued to block the church's development plans unnecessarily. With the Rock of Ages Baptist Church being one of the bright spots in Maywood, violence in that town remain at an all time high. Gangs, drugs, prostitution, and corruption are rampant! The Maywood Village officials need to get there acts together! If not, Maywood's voters should throw them out in April 2009!!!!

I think that the people at the the Rock of ages church should get there act together. Not the Maywood Village Officals. just because they dont agree with the church is trying to do is not fair to the people the community. The rock only cares about what the rock wants. what about the people that live around the church. no mention of them.the churuch should stop useing same old story about gangs, drugs ect. why they feel that they should have their way.sorry rock get out town. You are not for maywood you are for the rock.Im for maywood.find your self some land and let the tax payers have theirs where people pay taxes.

Wow!! I would read this comment if I could get past all of the typos and grammatical errors! Looks like maybe you NEED the Rock's literacy classes??

Maybe, so but i don't need the rock of ages church for them to move people out of their homes and community. this not about literacy it's about the people that have something to say.bottom line is your church needs to MOVE. oh by the way what is this vission that Rev Wiley has for maywood? the only i see is for Madison Street to look like Black top and black fences.more cars the more money he takes in.What a Preacher.

grammatical errors aside...let's be real. It is sad when ROA has been allowed to buy as much land as they have pleased and it is still not enough. I have to agree with one of the other comments, maybe Maywood is not good enough for Rev. Wiley. Maywood and ROA was good enough for Sykes. He lived here, built here and made attempts to make the church part of the community; not a community in itself. What exactly has ROA done for Maywood? They are not a taxable agency, so their money is theirs. Thank you ROA and Wiley for knocking down old houses and building, but what did you put in place? Parking lots and more ROA buildings. Whatever happened to the senior home (Wade Square) that was supposed to be built? At least Winston and Living Word brought and economy (Ultra Foods, OCB, etc) to the church property. Maywood has never been good enough for Wiley and his family (Downer's Grove is! Church members should question why there money is good enough to put inot a Maywood building but not good enough to for the pastor to raise his family in.) How many scholarships does ROA award? I am sure Wiley's enjoys her college days at Depaul or Loyola. How much rental assitance or food pantry donations does ROA give to the community and its members? I am sure that the mortgage and fridge in the Wiley houehold are ok. How many marches through Maywood has Wiley attended to help stop or bring attention to the problem he always uses as an excuse when he wants more land for ROA? Shouldn't the pastor be the heart of the communiyt he serves? Maybe he is the heart of someone else's community. I am not pro Wiley and Anti Wiley. I am just tired of churches using threats as a way to get what they want. I put Wiley in the same category as Meeks, Jesse Jackson, etc. Preachers who seem to preach for attention and funds and not for the people. I have heard Wiley preach and have been moved by some of his words. I think I would respect him more if he stop trying to find ways to leave the Maywood community and start trying to find ways to mend and grow the Maywood community. Please excuse my typos.

You may not always understand the move of God and how the Lord directs the Man of God, but time is moving on, why should we as a race of African American not have the best, the church has always been a pillar in our communities, but the people in the communities do not always agree with the church, that's fine, because NO ONE can stop the move of God. Many blessing and continual success for Rock Of Ages Baptist Church. Bishop T. D. Jakes had to make a move and look at where he his now. He listened to the voice of the Lord and I'm sure he was not always in favor of all the people, but God made a way. Pastor Wiley, keep listening and God will continue to direct your path.

I wish you and Pastor Wiley the best. But you have to also understand that the people of this city voices should also be heard. God speaks to us all. not just Rev Wiley.we also know what's best for maywood.Yes the church is a important part of every community but the church should not try and be the community.Good luck to ROA in your relocateing.

This is such a old post but I couldn't resist saying that the rock pays taxes for those who don't know and they give back to the community often. Free services like tax preparation, back to school bookbags, free turkeys during thanksgiving, free computer classes for the elderly, job relocation assistance, free diabetic and aids testing and the list goes on. And most of these services are available to anyone whether you are a member or not. I am not saying this in a combative nature but as a member, I see that this church does a lot for the maywood community. And for that reason I joined. Often it is the perception that big churches don't do anything but get rich. This is not true for all. By no means is the church perfect as is any church but I will encourage you to read up on the rock and it's services and you will see.
