The FBI and the village of Maywood are offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information in the 2006 murder of Maywood Police Officer Thomas Wood.
The reward is offered for information that leads to the identification and arrest of the person or persons responsible for the officer's murder in the near west suburb.
A nine-year veteran of the Maywood police, Wood was found shot to death in his marked patrol car near 6th Avenue and Erie Street at the end of his scheduled afternoon shift on Oct. 23, 2006, according to a release Tuesday from the Chicago office of the FBI.
Wood, 37, a canine officer for Maywood, was in the driver's seat and had been shot multiple times. The engine was running when found. Robbery did not appear to be a motive, according to the release, since Wood's weapon and wallet were still on him when he was found.
Wood was active in the Maywood Police Department's effort to investigate and eliminate gang activity in the village, the FBI said, and it is believed his murder was related to these efforts.
In addition to publicizing this reward offer, the FBI's Chicago office will be assisting Maywood police in the murder investigation and will begin investigating gang activity and drug trafficking in the suburb.
Anyone with information about the murder should call the FBI at (312) 421-6700.

A lot of people are expressing the idea Wood was killed by another police officer.
He was! Officer Wheeler did it!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I hope Wheeler kills some more Drug Dealing Thugs. I'm sick of them. If everybody else has to go to school, get an education, find a job and work, then why can't they do the same. Guess what, they DON'T WANT TO WORK!!! They all work their drugs at night or in the wee hours of the morning, while decent law abiding citizens are sleeping. Then when the citizens go to work, they break into their homes and steal their possessions or they might take a day off and sleep all day, refreshed to be up all night committing criminal acts. They will give you a lame excuse that no one will hire them, because they are convicted felons. That is not true, it is too many programs available for them. They are just not willing to work for peanuts when they can make big bucks selling dope. The Police Chief does not live in the village, so it does not affect her.
John Woods was a good guy , maybe he had his faults, but all he talked about was his wife and kids,he was my friend , he didnt deserve what happened ,Wheeler/Willard had something to do with this, you know it,I know it! maybe the bureau after waiting a year will get them/him ,send 'em to trial, convict 'em and consign them to the fourth level of hell with all the dead pedophiles , where only the worst are sent by the almighty. If they don't someone else WILL !
Hey anonymous , John was shot multiple times in the face and torso , no gang banger or druggie could do that without spraying rounds all over the place, shooting someone in the face is not easy nor can just anybody do it. Besides John knew his aassailant or he wouldnt have let them get that close, and they took time to pick up their brass afterwards?
A remembered man lives forever !
I know a lot of Maywood police officers and who are a lot of people saying it was a cop. You're probably just another ignorant drug dealer with a bubble Chevy with 24" wheels that cost more than the car and have 2 kids with 2 baby mamas and don't even pay child support because you only get $150 a month on your Link card. On my mama Joe. Officer Wheeler did it- you've either been arrested by Wheeler or your brother was.
Yeah that was definitely a hit on Wood. I observed him 4 hours prior to his death diligently doing good police work. People are extremely disturbed about the circumstances of his death. Wish there was more insight on who killed him. Damm where are the psychics when you need them? Are they on strike?
The West Suburban pubished the $100,000 reward for Wood's assassin several months before the police department announcement.
I hear the dept was upset with the paper. But why?
Why not offer incentive to find a killer, unless he's one of your own; Wheeler
Just so some of you know, his name is Tom...not John.
